Workshops

Several times a year, I offer small, hands-on knitting workshops in my hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, as well as in other wonderful locations around the state. One of my favorite events is my annual knitwear-design workshop on Block Island, which I host with my friends Sven and Laura Risom of North Light Fibers.

Is This Workshop for You?

If you’re curious about expanding your skills or deepening your confidence as a knitter, consider these questions:

  • How can I personalize a knitting pattern and make creative choices?

  • How can I feel more in control of my project, rather than simply following instructions?

  • How can I make garments better suited to my body and size?

  • How can I improve my finishing techniques?

  • How does the history of knitting inspire simple, satisfying projects today?

  • What makes different stitch families unique, and how are they formed?

If any of these spark your interest, you’ll feel right at home in my workshops.

About the Workshops

My sessions are designed to help knitters deepen their skills — whether you’re exploring fit, finishing, shaping, stitch structure, or your own design ideas. I keep my classes small (usually around 10 students) so everyone receives personal attention and plenty of time to ask questions.

If you’re interested in attending one of my upcoming workshops, I’d love to hear from you. Please email me directly at deborahnewtonknits@gmail.com and I’ll make sure you’re notified as new sessions are scheduled. Space is limited, so early interest is always appreciated.

What past students have said about working with Deborah:

“I learned so much in such a short period of time. Deborah is very generous and shares her wealth of information and design tools to the students and you get to put them into practice. Since taking this course I have had two designs selected to be published in knitting magazines. This course gave me the confidence and the tools I needed to jump start my design career. I wish I would have taken this class years ago!"

“I am a big fan of Deborah Newton's patterns and books. I loved this opportunity to put her ideas and advice into practice. This is a very practical, hands on workshop for anyone who wants to create original designs, modify or even just improve their knitting skill existing patterns. Deborah is a generous, genuine and supportive teacher."

"I've toyed with designing for several years, but didn't really know how to get started. So when the opportunity arose to study under & learn from Deborah Newton, I jumped at the chance. What a treat to be on the receiving end of all of Deborah's knowledge! We were provided all the tools & resources necessary to truly understand what being a knitwear designer is all about. The group size was small & there was plenty of one-on-one guidance from Deborah. I'm excited to say that because of this design workshop, I am about to release my first design on Ravelry."
